The other night we had the pleasure of tasting a bottle of 2006 Mersault by Henri Boillot. This Chardonnay from the middle of the Cote de Beaune (in the middle, sort of, of Burgundy) is still young.
It has, like lots of wines that sound like your middle school teachers, ”lots of potential.” The nose is complex, as you might expect, with flowers and pears, On the tongue (the palate) it’s almost juicy (for a Mersault) and tastes of lemon-lime with balanced oak on the finish. We should all be so lucky to drink wines like this on an annual basis, much less a monthly or weekly basis!
Baby back ribs were paired with a 2006 Rafanelli Dry Creek Valley Sonoma County Zinfandel. Berries and earth on the nose. Still a bit hard and tight, flavors of blackberries, a little menthol and full tannins. This one still needs some time.
Two very different wines from very different places-both young requiring time to mature-just like some people we know!
